Tensions erupt in Indian state after 11-year-old raped and murdered

Tensions erupt in Indian state after 11 – West Bengal has faced escalating tensions after an 11-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Surjyapur village, near Kolkata. Her body was discovered in a pond on Sunday, following a missing persons report filed by her family the previous day. The incident has sparked widespread demonstrations, a mob lynching of an accused man, and the police killing of one suspect, with three others still detained.

Community’s search leads to tragic discovery

The girl’s family last saw her on Saturday afternoon as she left to purchase a gift for a friend. When she failed to return, relatives rushed to the police station at 20:30 on Saturday to seek assistance. They claimed the authorities dismissed their concerns, promising to investigate the next day. Frustrated, locals reviewed CCTV footage from nearby shops and identified the child walking with Prabhash Mondal, a local resident.

On Sunday morning, a crowd stormed Mondal’s home, seizing him and delivering him to the police. Hours later, the body of the girl was found in the pond, with media reporting that Mondal had guided officers to the location. A post-mortem confirmed her death was caused by drowning, fueling claims she was still alive when placed there.

“Had the police acted earlier, she could have been saved,” her relatives said.

Political fallout and religious tensions

The case has intensified political scrutiny, with opposition parties blaming the newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for inadequate protection of women. The government has established a special investigation team (SIT) and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari met with the family to reassure them. “Our government is committed to curb any such incidents in the state. The police is doing what needs to be done. The family has spoke to me, they have lost their beloved daughter. I believe that they are satisfied talking to me,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the incident has taken on religious dimensions, as the victim was Muslim and the accused men are Hindus. A local BJP leader, Sushant Mondal, faced a mob attack after being accused of aiding the suspects. He denied the allegations, asserting they were “false” and that he had “helped catch the perpetrators.”

Escalating violence and public unrest

Protests turned violent, with roads, shops, and a railway station vandalized. A young man was beaten to death by the crowd, later identified as innocent by the Chief Minister. Several officers sustained injuries, and vehicles were damaged as authorities tried to control the situation. Police have registered three cases and detained 40 individuals.

Authorities have amended the police complaint to include charges under the Pocso Act, a stringent law addressing child sexual abuse. However, no official press conference has been held to address the allegations. The area remains under strict security, with public gatherings banned and paramilitary forces deployed to quell unrest.

The event has become a pivotal moment for the BJP, which recently assumed power in West Bengal after a historic election victory in May. Analysts suggest the party’s campaign promising a safer environment for women played a key role in its win, though the case now challenges that narrative.
